Owing to its unique history, location and architecture, the population of Fatih, the capital district of Istanbul, can reach 3.5 million at peak times - making it the largest municipality in the city. The district – also the heart of historic Constantinople – is today home to provincial authorities including the governor's office, police headquarters, metropolitan municipality and the tax office.
Secure and streamlined
For the benefit of both the local residents and the huge number of tourists who visit the area each year, the Mayor of Fatih, Ergün Turan, wanted to make sure the municipality had the best and most secure broadband network in Istanbul.
Taking on the challenger were Fathi’s IT manager Suat Eryılmaz and Technical Manager Koray Sevinç. They began searching for a partner who would be able to bring together the twelve separate broadband networks that were running in the area with just one network and provide a solution which could handle the high levels of interference which occur across the area.
After passing a series of stringent tests to ensure that the proposed solution was viable, the contract was awarded to Infinet Wireless and the process of consolidating the different and highly sensitive existing VLANs into one network began. Networks used by the Disaster Coordination Center for CCTV and radio communication and the Police Department's radio communication network (used for voice, internet and intranet purposes) all had to be coordinated into the new solution.
Working closely with local partner Radio Teknoloji, all of the municipality’s different networks; such as CCTV, hotspot services, intranet, guest services, personnel information system, access control systems, surveillance cameras at parks and gardens and security systems are now running over Infinet Wireless solutions.
Radio Teknoloji Technical Manager Salih Yıldırım worked hard to maximize the performance of Infinet Wireless’ products despite the region being full of buildings and hills that provided interference. Now the Fatih municipality has one of the biggest Infinet Wireless networks in country, equipped with a mesh of solutions including the Quanta 5.
The municipality of Fatih can now manage all their municipal units from a single point and have significantly improved CCTV coverage across the area. The number of Infinet Wireless devices deployed in Fatih has risen from 84 to nearly to 115, providing a backbone for the 260 CCTV cameras which operate across the municipality, many in the area’s public parks. They can also instantly share their images with Istanbul Police headquarters. Visitors to Fatih’s many parks and open spaces also now benefit from free internet, which also extends into some municipal building too. Soon all parks and units will be connected.
Fatih Municipality Technical Manager Koray Sevinç said that “Infinet Wireless and Radio Teknoloji have integrated 12 different VLANs seamlessly into one end-to-end solution. All 12 can utilise either the same or different endpoints with the same high level of performance all of the time”. Mr Sevinç was also pleased with the way the new system cuts through interference; a quality which sets Infinet Wireless solutions above other competitors they had considered to be their new network provider.
